Recent developments show that the M25 will be undergoing significant closures in both directions between junction 10, at Wisley, and junction 11, at Woking, between 7 and 10 March, as well as from 21 until 24 March.
As technology has advanced, it has become commonplace for drivers to rely on online maps and navigation tools – which are often geared towards non-professional drivers and don’t take into account truck-safe routes and requirements. However, effective route optimisation for commercial drivers requires far more insight than simple, ubiquitous directions that can’t differentiate between a commercial vehicle and a two-seat sports car.
With this, some professional drivers may find themselves stuck in long delays or being rerouted – especially if they rely on consumer sat nav solutions. Alternatively, if drivers stray from the designated route in favour of a shorter one, they could receive additional fines, such as the £12.50 ULEZ charge if they stray from a reliable mapping solution to divert through London, additionally risking paying unexpected tolls.
Commercial mapping intelligence has evolved beyond simple visualisations to offer a wide range of insights about business and driver behaviour to enhance fleet management.
Smart mapping and navigation solutions not only take into account published roadwork diversions, vehicle specifications, delivery requirements, detour distances and traffic conditions, these tools also enable businesses to navigate the Low Emission Zones throughout the UK and ongoing and future road closures such as the M25.”
To avoid costly delays, fines and interruptions to delivery schedules, it’s crucial for fleet and logistics businesses to ensure that drivers are equipped with smart navigation tools that account for a businesses vehicle type, potential road restrictions, and real-time conditions. By doing so, drivers will be able to optimise their deliveries, enable smoother routes and remove the chance of unexpected delays, despite major disruptions like the M25 closure.
